This twisted tale from the mind of
Elizabeth Stuart Phelps seems to have nothing to do with the original tale that
took place in the kingdom of Arthur, but really it is just a more modern take
on the tale. Some of the characters represent a character from the original
tale: The Lady of Shalott is, obviously, the Lady of Shalott, the doctor is
Lancelot, but I don’t really understand who Sary Jane represents from the
original tale. And though Lancelot is represented by the doctor, why is that
so? Lancelot never tried to really help the Lady of Shalott in the original
tale like the doctor did, all he did at the end was comment on her beauty in
death.
