Le Morte d’Arthur
Out of this passage in the story,
and the climax of the novel the issue that struck me as the main motif
throughout the story was that a person cannot fight destiny. However, Arthur
was able to circumvent the play of destiny by small amount during the final
battle against Modred. Even after receiving a fated vision from heaven that
Lancelot would kill Modred, Arthur decided to go against prophecy as he could
not allow for Modred to continue his war unchecked against the knights that
followed Arthur. Perhaps the twist of fate was allowed for a King who proved
himself to God. Even though Modred fulfilled his prophecy of killing Arthur the
fact that Arthur was able to take his son allows for a wrap up of the last
misgiving that Arthur left in the world of the living.
