In the tale of Lanval we are introduced
to the worst possible insult of the time period: being homosexual. Being a
homosexual or even being accused of being a homosexual was a very serious
thing. To the people of that time period being a homosexual was a horrible sin
that would damn you for eternity. Even associating yourself with someone who
was accused of being homosexual could damn you to a life in hell along with
that person. Why was being a homosexual such a big deal? The time period we’re
reading about was very religious and the majority of the people of that time were
Christian, therefore they strongly believed that marriage, as well as love, was
meant to be between a man and a woman. Knowing
the severity of the claim the queen makes, it is surprising that she uses it
against Lanval knowing that he has done nothing of the sort and is not
homosexual.
